GYOPO facilitated a panel discussion at Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Los Angeles with artists and organizers from alternative spaces based in South Korea and Los Angeles. Participants Jungmin Cho (White Noise, Seoul); Inyoung Yeo (SpaceOne, Seoul); Jisoo Chung (artist, Los Angeles); Eric Kim (HRLA & Bel Ami, Los Angeles); and Alex Paik (Tiger Strikes Asteroid, various US locations), addressed motivations to ‘fill a gap’ in the art world to start their alternative art spaces, such as supporting artists from underexposed communities and artwork with less commercial appeal, and providing a platform to address critical issues and discourses in the broader art ecosystem.

All emphasized organizational and funding strategies to ensure more agency, sustainability, and creative freedom, which characterizes their “alternative” mission and structure compared to mainstream art spaces. They exchanged views on the Seoul and LA alternative art scene, including local/national contexts and the unique challenges they face.
