Before the recent global popularity of South Korean films and dramas, the 1950s and 1960s saw the emergence of some of the most dynamic cinematic auteurs who produced such classics as Madame Freedom (1956), The Housemaid (1960), Mother and a Guest (1961), and Aimless Bullet (1961). The first day of the symposium was held at the UCLA Young Research Library on February 4th, with presenters Christina Klein, Travis Workman, Kyung Hyun Kim and Virginia Moon, with Kathleen McHugh acting as moderator. The second day of the symposium was held at the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, with presenters Steven Chung, Paul Fischer, Darcy Paquet, Kyung Hyunn Kim, Irhe Sohn, and Laura Ha Reizman as moderator.
