GYOPO partnered with Vivian Yoon (she/her), host of the K-pop Dreaming podcast of LAist Studios for a live event where panelists Jheanelle Brown, film/video faculty at CalArts, and Michelle Cho, theorist of contemporary Korean media and pop culture, delved into the origins of K-pop spanning from the influence of hip hop on the sound and dance, to the impact of American imperialism on the genre. The panel also shared thoughts on understanding how to identify and be aware of the complexities of the term GYOPO, and other nuances that the term diaspora holds. Audience members prompted the panelists to discuss cultural appropriation and appreciation, and accountability in K-Pop industry practices. The panel was preceded and followed by K-pop hits deejayed by DJ BOBA BEAR.
