GYOPO hosted a virtual conversation with Christina Oh and Harry Yoon, producer and editor of 2020 film Minari directed by Lee Isaac Chung and starring Steven Yeun, Youn Yuh-jung, Han Ye-ri, and Alan Kim. This special event invited attendees to a closer look into the process behind both film workers as they worked on the story about a Korean immigrant family who moves to rural Arkansas during the 1980s in hopes of starting a new life through farming. Distributed by A24 and warmly received by critics at its premiere at Sundance Film Festival, Minari introduced a global audience to the human experience of first generation immigrants in search of stability in America. In conversation, Oh and Yoon go in depth about their creative decisions, building complexity in characters, and honoring the movie’s audience.
Oh, Yoon, and the entire Minari cast and crew went on to be nominated for six awards at the Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress—the last of which Youn won for her performance, making her the first Korean to win an Academy Award for acting.
