Artist Haena Yoo led a walkthrough of her solo exhibition Self Love Club, which was inspired by her sister’s interest in yoga/pilates, the cultural appropriation of the well-being/wellness industry, and bodily practices that often confer social status. The exhibition featured kinetic installations made from deconstructed pilates machines with vinyl sculptures (meant to evoke “bodies”) filled with health foods, yoga wear, and other spiritual and medicinal products. Yoo spoke about the current popularity of yoga and pilates in Korea as well as how “self-love” can be seen as an oxymoron that internalizes societal issues, disciplining one’s body while also demoting it into utility and passivity.
