Join the GYOPO Book Club for a special session on Korean revolutionary Kim San’s memoir 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘳𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨 from on April 30, 7-9PM at the GYOPO Space in Koreatown, led with the incredible Kaya Press.
First published in 1941 and long unavailable in print, 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘳𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨 tells the story of Kim San (Jang Ji-rak), a young radical who left colonized Korea as a teenager to join the struggle against Japanese imperialism and fought alongside the Red Army during the Chinese Revolution. With its first-hand account of early 20th-century guerilla insurgency and radical cross-pollination, this rare, behind-the-scenes look into what Nym Wales describes as “the psyche of a dedicated and thoughtful revolutionary” gives voice to the brutality, betrayal and alliances that rocked East Asia at the beginning of the last century and continue to shape the region—and the world—today.
Join Professor Dongyoun Hwang (historian), Professor Sunyoung Park (literature), and Publisher Sunyoung Lee (Kaya Press) for a discussion of what lessons the ideals and passions of a 20th century Korean revolutionary might have for us in our present moment.
We welcome those who have read 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘳𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨, skimmed it, are interested in reading it in the future, or are currently finishing the book. Beverages will be provided. Feel free to bring shareable snacks.
