with curator Soojung Kang

As an extension of the exhibition Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea,1960s–1970s, contributing artist and pioneer of the Korean avant-garde movement Sung Neung Kyung delivered a special live performance followed by a conversation with Only the Young curator Soojung Kang, audience Q&A, and reception at the GYOPO Space.

Sung told audience members who had seen his performance at the Hammer Museum the previous day to experience his GYOPO Space performance with “different senses,” as the performance changes with its environment. The post-performance conversation between Sung and Kang was conducted on top of the tables where Sung had performed. Hula-hooping throughout the entire session, Sung responded to Kang’s questions and reflected on his ideas, achievements, and regrets, giving audiences an in-depth lesson on Korean experimental art of the 1970s. He shared his motivations behind using newspapers to expose the then-authoritarian regime and to remain in the non-mainstream minority in pursuit of “another view.” For audiences who may find it challenging to understand the meaning of his performances which utilize everyday items such as newspapers, the hula-hoop, and ping pong balls, Sung explained that his performance reflects the conceptual art theory and personal artistic perspective of claiming everyday objects and physical movements as art-breaking conventions, and discovering what remains when meaning is ruled out, rather than dwelling in a sea of meanings.
