THE ARTIST’S WAY: A KOREA(N)-DIASPORA CREATIVE JOURNEY FOR GYOPO VOLUNTEERS
Led by Jisung Catherine Kim
LOCATION
GYOPO Space
DATE
February 16 - May 4, 2025
We will enter Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way to help us answer the call—our calling to become artists to ourselves and each other. Like gardens, art-making requires inner and outer nurturing, and over 12 weeks, we will work together to dream, heal, do, and make.
We will use the parameters set by Cameron while applying a “Korea-diaspora” filter to explore how Koreanness—its traumas, inspirations, and alienations—shapes our creative practices. This journey will help us rediscover familial and historical (dis)connections as methods of recovery and intervention.
Through writing prompts, discussions, and exercises, we will connect our creative processes to purpose-making and peace-making. The program culminates in a weekend celebration of our heterogeneous genius, featuring readings, exhibitions, and a collaborative zine.
Please note that this workshop may activate and bring to the surface denied, repressed, or forsaken vulnerabilities. Our time together will require humility, honesty and accountability. We commit to practicing loving-kindness toward ourselves and one another, meeting discomfort with care to grow deep and enduring roots—personally and politically, uniquely and collectively.
