At this program, panelists presented on how the aesthetics and evolving perspectives of cuteness influence their work. Artist Christina Yuna Ko described how cuteness serves as an entry point to understanding her “Asian-ness” and that its affective quality creates a physiological connection with her diasporic identity. Lulu Yao Gioiello, of FAR–NEAR, mentioned the often-personal aspects of cuteness and how it can give a “softer blow” to heavier subjects. Amy Yao shared her mixed and evolved feelings about cuteness and her interest in the pathos around cuteness in her artistic works. During the discussion moderated by curator Sophia Park, panelists shared their memories and the state of cuteness in today’s consumerist society. They also brought up the various issues that can come with cuteness, such as glossing over real problems and the “amazing and terrifying” ability of cuteness to affect others. The audience asked questions about soft power and limitations of cuteness, the intersection of cuteness with issues around gender/sexuality, and potential uplifting of Asian representation.
